Your Renewable Energy Presentation...

Introduction

Fossil fuels have been the main source of energy for transportation and to generate electricity for industrial and household use. Fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum and natural gas take millions of year to form and they may run out. When they have been used up, it will take millions of years for them to be replaced. The burning of fossil fuels also contributes greatly to the pollution and climatic changes that the Earth is experiencing, like global warming and the greenhouse effect.

Scientists are looking at alternatives to fossil fuels and these energy alternatives to be considered are:

wind energy;

solar energy;

energy from the oceans;

biomass;

geothermal; and

nuclear energy.

The Task

You will be working individually. Your task is to investigate one of the alternative energy sources listed above and prepare a report to identify the best solutions for Peak Oil.

Your powerpoint or google document presentation should include the following:

the name of the alternative energy source

description of that energy source

advantages/disadvantages of the energy source

reasons why we should or should not be using the energy source

brief description of resources needed

suitability for the United States

location of places in the USA where it is currently being used

As a class and in combination with Mr. Mayville's plan B 3.0, we will consider each of the alternative energy sources and make some recommendations as to which of them should be considered for our future energy needs.

Expectations:

Your assignment grade will be based on the following criteria including your class presentation:

Excellent: 20 or more slides with images and/or video embedded

Good: 15 or more slides with images and/or video embedded

Average: 10 or more slides with images and/or video embedded

Below Average : 5 or more slides with images and/or video embedded

Computer time during class and due dates will be announced and posted on the assignment list. Any questions, please ask! You will email your finished assignment to:

doug.abshire@adams14schools.org

Thanks, Mr. A

Is oil in your future?

As part of our ongoing invesitgation of Earth's problems and solutions, we will be using a google site for multiple assignments. You will be able to work by yourself or to pair up with another person. The google site is titled "Is oil in your future? and can be accessed here.

All assignment details and due dates are found on the front page of the google site. Questions and answers will be submitted electronically as a link to a google document or as an email attachment to doug.abshire@adams14schools.org. All assignments are given and due one week later. Global Warming Powerpoint

Introduction

You are part of a team of scientists who has been asked to study the causes, effects, and solutions to the Global Warming Crisis. Your research and findings will be used to formulate policy to global warming.

Task

PowerPoint Slideshow

You will choose one of the two topics below. Once you have chosen your topic, use the list of resources to create a PowerPoint slideshow that illustrates the following:

* how does your topic (wildlife or energy) relate to global warming,
* what are some of the causes of global warming related to your topic
* what are some of the effects of global warming related to your topic, and
* what are some of the solutions to global warming related to your topic.

This activity will take two periods to complete. Due dates will be given out in class.
You will need to create a google doc presentation or a power point attachment to an email in order to save your presentation.

Email the link to your presentation to

You will present your findings to the class in a power point slideshow.

Evaluation

You will be evaluated on the power point slideshow and your oral presentation.

Slides are graded on background, sequencing of information, content / accuracy, spelling and grammar, and readibility of slides in terms of font size, graphics etc. A general guide for length of the slide show is: 4-6 slides = D, 7- 8 slides = C, 9 - 10 slides = B and 11 or more slides = A.

The presentation is graded on you speaking clearly, using complete sentences, enthusiasm, stays on topic, and content. Your presentation should be at least 3-5 minutes in length.

After completing this activity you should know the factors that relate your topic to global warming.
